A glazed or cracked belt and a tensioner arm that shakes at idle are the signs it is due.

### Doing it once

Check the alternator freewheel pulley and replace it if it slips or locks, as SKF points out; a failed freewheel chews up a new belt quickly. Many workshops do this kit together with the timing belt, since the auxiliary belt has to come off for that job anyway.
