On the job
The job
SACHS 560 483 replaces a worn front shock absorber on the Audi A4 B9. It is a mono-tube unit like the original, for standard suspension and early sports suspension without adaptive damping, saloon and Avant alike. Mounting is top pin, as on the original, so it goes straight in without changes.
Alongside it
Change dampers in pairs on the same axle so the car stays balanced under braking and in bends. With the old unit out, check the bump stops, dust covers and mounting bushes and replace any that are split or flattened; a new damper on a worn bump stop soon gets damaged again.
