The job
When an MQB 2.0 TDI thumps pulling away or clunks between gears, the rear pendulum mount under the gearbox is the first suspect. It is the link that stops the engine rocking back and forth under load. The part is cheap, reached from underneath and quick to fit, and one number covers Golf, Passat, Tiguan and Octavia.
Alongside it
Check the other two mounts while you are under the car: the hydraulic engine-side mount, 1003461, and the gearbox mount, 38515. Replacing all three together brings back a smooth take-off and idle, and saves the customer a second visit for the next mount to fail.
