On the job
The job
VKPC 88892 replaces the coolant pump on the OM651 diesel in the Mercedes Sprinter. It has a metal impeller and is a switchable, vacuum-controlled pump. A pump that weeps at the vent hole, whines or lets the engine run hot is the usual reason to change it. Check the old coolant for oil, rust or sludge first; whatever killed the old pump will kill the new one.
Doing it once
It comes with its gaskets. It is driven by the auxiliary belt, so check the belt and tensioner at the same time. Vacuum-controlled pumps need the control line and valve checked before the new pump goes in. Clean the mating face on the engine properly and torque the bolts evenly to the carmaker's figure. Flush the system and refill with the coolant the carmaker specifies; old or mixed coolant shortens the life of the new seal.
