The job
SACHS 802 696 is the upper mount that holds the front strut to the body on the VW Golf VII and VIII, Passat B8, Tiguan II and Skoda Octavia III and IV. It is the mount without a ball bearing and fits either side; ZF also offers repair kit 803 024 as an alternative. A worn mount shows up as knocking over bumps and creaking when the steering is turned at standstill.
Alongside it
The mount carries the full weight of the corner and takes the hits from the road, so it wears along with the strut. Replacing it when the struts come out avoids a second strip-down later; add the protection kit and have the wheel alignment checked afterwards.
